Getting ready to move? It can be a stressful time, but also an exciting time, depending on the circumstances. Whatever the reason for your relocation, it’s important to think about what you’re bringing along for the adventure. Sure, it’s possible to just throw everything into a box as you go from room to room, but you’re likely bringing along many items that you simply don’t need or want anymore. And let’s be honest: how many have us have moved the same box or bin from attic to attic without ever looking at what’s inside? If you’re experiencing stuff-overload as you prepare for your move, consider a key step before you bring out a single box: declutter.
Countless people have sworn by the power-packed wisdom of organizational guru Marie Kondo’s The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and while it may not exactly fall on your lengthy to-do list to stop and read a book, you can still get the gist as you prepare your things for their new location…or for the trash.
A few tips to declutter as you pack:
- Did you forget you had it? Have you already bought several other [insert item here] because you didn’t know you already had it? If so, it’s a good idea to either relocate the item (such as grouping it with similar items as you pack so that it’ll actually get used in your new place), or toss it.
- Are your closets out of control? Do you hang onto items that don’t fit and/or you don’t really care for anymore…just because? If so, consider that someone else may really enjoy wearing those pants or that top, so put it in the donation pile and don’t look back!
- Do you have a pantry full of canned goods that have yet to be touched in a year? Are you looking at pounds of food that you’re unlikely to eat in your new place? Look up your local food bank or food pantry and drop off a load that will make you feel great and benefit your community at the same time!
The most important tip: look at what you’re moving before you move. This may save you multiple boxes of unwanted stuff that will not only weigh down our moving trucks, but will also create a burden for you, whether you realize it or not. A new place is a great opportunity for a fresh start: some updated decor, a fun new layout for your furniture, and new habits that can help you declutter as you go!
